Why should we study the end-times prophecies?

This is the first message in an end-times series by Dr. Sproul on the last days. Eschatology—or the study of the “last days”—is full of heated debates. In this message, R.C. Sproul looks to Jesus’ own words to bring clarity to this topic. Why is it important to understand biblical prophecy?

Here are six reasons Christians should take eschatology seriously:

1. The study of end times warns the unbeliever of coming judgment.
2. The last days is a major part of the biblical account.
3. We are called to heed and declare the whole Word of God.
4. Future fulfillment of prophetic events fascinates people.
5. Believers are encouraged by a clear understanding of the end times.
6. Proper eschatology gives perspective into the tribulation of this age.

When will the Rapture happen?

This is the eleventh message in a series of end-times teaching by Dr. Sproul on the last days. What is the Rapture? Christians all agree that Jesus will return to take His church out of this fallen world, but there is disagreement as to how He will do it. Will Jesus secretly take His people out of this world only to return again later for the Resurrection? Dr. Sproul considers this question as he continues the study of The Last Days According to Jesus, with this message entitled “The Rapture.”

Admittedly, the resurrection of the dead can be a hard doctrine to swallow. For many, the closest cultural images of resurrection are a collection of competing near death experiences (NDEs; resuscitations, really), a handful of bad B-movie horror flicks, some fallen TV shows and a dark music video from the early 1980’s. But what does the Bible teach us about the resurrection of the body? When will the resurrection take place? What is this rapture we keep hearing about? And when will the rapture happen? We tackle these questions and more in this lesson of the Prophecy Course.

What Does the Bible Teach about the Rapture?

Pastor Bryan Wolfmueller asks and answers, “Is the rapture taught in the Bible? What is Paul teaching in 1 Corinthians 15:51 and 1 Thessalonians 4:13? What does it mean to be left behind?”

What is the Abomination of Desolation?

This is the seventh in a series of end-times messages by Dr. Sproul on the last days. Prior to the New Testament days of Jesus, the Temple of God had been destroyed during the invasion of Jerusalem by the Babylonians. We know this because God told the prophet Jeremiah that it would come to pass as divine judgment on His people. In light of that, how should we interpret the destruction of Jerusalem and the Temple in 70 A.D.? Was that an act of divine judgment? What did Daniel the prophet say to foretell that event? In this message entitled “The Destruction of Jerusalem,” Dr. Sproul introduces us to one of the best attested historical events in ancient history as it relates to redemptive history.

Do we interpret end-time prophesy literally or figuratively?

This is the fourth message in an end-times series by Dr. Sproul on the last days. Jesus’ prophecy of His return includes both literal predictions and apocalyptic language. How do we know when to understand the Scriptures literally or symbolically?

Understanding the Olivet Discourse

Session transcript for the Olivet Discourse, Part 1.

Session transcript for the Olivet Discourse, Part 2.

This is the third message in the end-times series by Dr. Sproul on the last days. At the Mount of Olives, the disciples asked Jesus when He would return. In this message, R.C. Sproul considers Jesus’ surprising answer.

The Beast

A notorious figure listed in the book of Revelation is called “The Beast.” So who is the beast identified in the book of Revelation? Has he already come or should we still expect him? In this prophecy class, Dr. Sproul matches the biblical portrait of the beast with a man who fits the description right down to the name.

In any modern Bible study on the last days, a common practice for understanding the dark, end-times enemy known as the Antichrist is to mix together Paul’s man of lawlessness, John’s antichrists (plural), and John’s beast of Revelation 13, while sprinkling in a dash of Daniel’s 70th week for flavor. The result? A tyrannical dictator the likes this world has never seen. But is this apocalyptic amalgamation biblical?
